What You Should Know About Dog Clothes

Dressing up your dog

Beautiful and functional clothes are a necessity in every dog’s wardrobe. Learn why dressing up your dog is not so bad idea.

I will share something with you… My dogs are all happy! This is perfectly understandable, because every owner is happy to see his fluffy little friend in a cute dress. However, this is also a joy for the animals, because they absorb your emotions and reflect them as a mirror. Dressing up your dog is fine when there is a purpose.

Well, many dog owners may deny it or make fun of it. However, I will try to convince you that dog clothes are not always a whim of the owner! Every pet dog is more or less perceived as a family member and in some cases you even treat him as “your hairy kid”.

The dog gives you joy, boundless and infinite love. You as a dog owner, in turn, try to give him the best that you are capable of. Without over-caring and turning them into furry live dolls that replace the child in the family, I will try to explain to you that dressing up your dog can be more than just a whim.

Should Dogs Wear Clothes?

Keep in mind that in many cases, the various breeds that live on a particular territory may not be adapted to the climate. Some breeds come from warmer countries and the cold is not good for them.

In other situations, protection from moisture and dirt is a huge advantage for owners of long-haired and large breeds, although they are used to the cold.

Imagine a fluffy white Samoyed (or any other long-haired breed) wandering through muddy puddles of almost sub-zero temperature. Funny, isn’t it? Well, yes, but it will be fun for a while…

To make the idea clearer just look at the picture below 🙂

With this example, I am not telling you not to have fun in the mud…. On the contrary, these are unforgettable memories. Do not deprive the dog of this fun and do not take it away from its natural environment. But let’s face it – there are times when it’s not fun to bathe this fluffy ball of hair every day.

There are a lot more breeds which require protective clothes. Small and adult dogs need even more warm clothes in cold weather. It’s not about over-caring, it’s about dressing up your dog when necessary. There is absolutely no point in dressing up your dog warmly at high temperatures.

Even if necessary, the clothes should be a thin fabric suitable for the weather. Excessive dressing of the dog will stimulate his hair loss and will cause more problems at home.

In addition, it is good to mention that if the dog sleeps in a room that is not heated, then he will certainly need warm clothes to sleep with.

This dog outfit should be loose and well-designed so that the dog feels comfortable while sleeping. It is the owner who can best know whether the dog needs a dress or not.

What Are The Signs That Can Indicate Your Dog Is Cold?

  • Shivering with no visible health problem
  • Curling up with pillows and blankets
  • Long sleep (oversleeping) and a reluctance to go outside
  • Loses interest in playing with you or toys
  • The walks outside are short and the dog does not want to poop

When the temperature outside is very different from the temperature inside, the dog may not want to walk and do his physiological needs. In such cases, clothes are a necessity!

Dressed, the dog will be much calmer, playful and will want to spend more time outside. The clean and fresh winter air is good for breathing and for the dog’s body.

This is your pet’s natural environment. Even though clothes are so unnatural to dogs, it becomes a must-have element, since people have long since separated these animals from their nature, and they are not fully adapted to this way of life anymore.

Small and very old dogs also need clothes when temperatures are low. Their blood circulation is different from that of mature dogs, and they need additional warming.

How To Choose And Buy The Right Dog Clothes?

When choosing dog clothes, convenience should be a priority. Don’t go for dog dresses, hats, scarves and other stuff that are just accessories. Warmth and comfort come first. Do not miss reading Dog Clothes – How to Choose Only The Best

Short-haired dogs, whether large or small, are also more sensitive to cold weather and humidity. Dog clothes mean a lot more than anything I am able to mention in this article.

Sometimes clothes can help dogs with health problems when the pet for example has a skin problem or is dewormed and it needs to be not touched for some time.

Dog clothes are useful even after a bath, when the dog wants to wipe himself in all your furniture 🙂 You know that, don’t you?

I would like to make more people understand that dog outfit should be a combination of convenience, functionality and beauty. It is extremely wrong to believe that dog clothes should perform its function, regardless of their style.

A beautiful outfit brings a lot of positive emotions, both for the owner and the dog, although the dog does not understand the meaning of fashion.

How Do I Get My Dog Used To Wearing Clothes?

So if after all this you already share my opinion that dog clothes are a necessity in many cases, let’s move on to dog training. The thing you should definitely remember and follow strictly is to never mock, laugh or humiliate the animal in any way when dressing up your dog!

Even if it’s super cute and funny in your new clothes, you shouldn’t laugh. The dog may accept it as something wrong. If you really want to enjoy his cute face, record a video and watch it freely afterwards. The same applies to shoes.

More Useful Dog Tips For Dressing Up Your Dog:

  • Teach the dog from an early age to wear clothes if the breed requires it or there is another factor in his life (health issue for example) that requires it. When puppies are small, they accept dressing for play, but will soon get used to the clothes like wearing a bib or collar.
  • Choose clothes that are easy to wear when you first try. Avoid clothes that are too tight, the ones that dress over head or any other that cover feet and legs. Focus first on clothes such as raincoats (see examples here). Once the dog gets used to wearing these clothes, you can step by step teach him to wear sweaters, t-shirts and others that dress over his head.
  • Show your dog the clothes you want to wear. Let him smell it and get to know the clothes. Say “good boy” or “good girl“ and give a reward when the dog shows interest in clothes.
  • Try dressing up your dog slowly and with patience. Show him that there is nothing scary or unusual. Praise him for his good behavior and reward him when he remains calm. Slowly start fastening the clothes while your pet is staying calm.
  • Give your dog food or a toy to play with while wearing dog clothes. The toy distracts him, so he will not pay attention to the clothes he is wearing. Meanwhile, continue to encourage his good behavior by praising him.
  • Remove the dog clothes after a short time and repeat the lesson the next day. This time, keep the clothes on him a little longer – about 10 minutes. Carefully observe your dog’s behavior and if he is tolerant to clothes, increase the duration of wearing them until he gets used to and stop paying attention to them.

Final Words

Be sure to encourage him with rewards, words and gestures so that he can accept the clothes as part of his life.

If clothes are only for the outside, the dog will begin to associate it with walking and will be willing to give a paw to put his clothes on.

Sometimes he may be impatient, but with a lot of training you will get the good results, and you will both be happy when going outside for a walk.
